Categories // News

San Francisco 90's alternative rock band Third Eye Blind released a single paying tribute to the Occupy Wallstreet movement.

San Francisco 90's alternative rock band Third Eye Blind released a single paying tribute to the Occupy Wallstreet movement.  The song starts with an audio clip from a scene involving an Iraq veteran, Scott Olsen, who broke his skull due to a tear canister thrown at him by an Oakland Police.

"If There Ever Was A Time" wants to bring out the message that now is the time to take it to the streets.

Stephen Jenkins, Lead singer and song writer explains:

"I think college students are going to come to terms with the unfairness of student loans, the hallowing out of jobs from finance based capitalism, and the depletion of public wealth.  When you take money out of politics, which is what Occupy Wall Street is about for me, you reverse these trends. This encourage their participation.  I hope we flood this movement with music."

Hawaiian singer Makana Occupies President Obama’s state dinner

Categories // News

"President Obama held a Luau for leaders of Pacific Rim nations at a summit in Honolulu last night. As part of the entertainment, popular Hawaiian singer Makana was invited to serenade them.

But Makana had just released his new homage to the Occupy Movement, We Are The Many. How could he resist the opportunity? In the midst of the dinner he pulled open his jacket revealing a t-shirt emblazoned Occupy With Aloha. And he sang his song to President Obama and the assembled world leaders, including Chinese President Hu Jintao and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev."

We’ll occupy the streets, we’ll occupy the courts, we’ll occupy the offices of you/

Members of Occupy SLO to Speak at Public Comment to the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors

Categories // News

Public Comment, 9:00 AM this Tuesday, November 8, 2011

Members of Occupy SLO to Speak at Public Comment to the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors

Tomorrow morning, Tuesday the 8th of November, we welcome all supporters of Occupy SLO to attend the Public Comment session of the SLO County Board of Supervisors meeting, beginning at 9:00 AM in the County Government Center Board Chambers located at 1055 Monterey Street, Room D-170, in San Luis Obispo.

In recent communication with the SLO County Board of Supervisors we have acknowledged the legitimacy of specific health and safety concerns, and have proposed our solutions to eliminate them.

Even though our solutions were not placed on this week's meeting agenda (as requested), we need to be present at tomorrow's meeting (and every upcoming meeting) to let our voices be heard. We are taking their concerns seriously, and must make sure they do too. We believe our support and momentum will grow exponentially once the County's concerns are addressed.

For anyone interested, here are some suggested topics for public comments:

  • personal statements of how you, as part of the 99%, are suffering from a broken system and what you want to see change
  • the severity of current events which we are working so hard to fix -- our voices must be heard all day and every day
  • our solidarity with Occupy Wall St and other occupations of this peaceful, global movement
  • our (urgent) social responsibility to engage in our government
  • our guaranteed rights to freedom of speech and assembly
  • our commitment to sustaining this ongoing, safe, healthy, educational free speech activity

Remember, the conversation is NOT about "camping" or dwelling on their safety concerns -- we have already proposed the solutions. The conversation is about our improved ability to manage the occupation and our need to make it a viable, long-term situation

Even if you cannot give it tomorrow, prepare a statement for next week. And even if you don't want to say it, there may be someone willing to read it for you!

Thanks for your support!

Solidarity Rally, Fun Day, and General Assembly

To stand in stolidarity with other Occupy sites and strengthen community

Today there is a solidarity rally planned at Mitchell Park, and everyone is welcome to bring food, games, activities, music, etc so that we can have some fun together and just relax for a bit. The rally and fun begins at 12:00 PM and there is a General Assembly at 3:00 PM. The agenda is short for the GA since we are in the middle of restructuring our organization, but perhaps the only item should be open the dialogue to public comment for critique of movement thus far and hear suggestions for how to improve and go forward from here.

Tonight: Vigils Across America for Scott Olsen, Marine Veteran Critically Injured by Police Projectile at Occupy Oakland

Categories // News

Call for Vigils for Scott at Occupations Everywhere

Scott is one of an increasing number of war veterans who are participating in America’s growing Occupy movement

This morning Occupy Oakland and Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) put out a call for occupations across America and around the world to hold solidarity vigils for Scott Olsen, a former Marine and two time Iraq War veteran. Olsen sustained a skull fracture after being shot in the head on October 25 with a police projectile while peacefully participating in an Occupy Oakland march.

Occupy Oakland and IVAW — an organization that Scott Olsen is a member of — are organizing the Oakland vigil. It will be held today, Thursday, October 27, 7:00pm PST, during the General Assembly of Occupy Oakland at 14th St. and Broadway.

They are also calling on other occupations that are part of the 99% movement to take time to vigil for Scott this evening. Some occupations will take a few moments during their General Assembly to hold Scott in their thoughts, to honor his commitment to social justice, and to hope for his strong recovery.

Scott joined the Marines in 2006, served two tours in Iraq, and was discharged in 2010. Scott moved to California from Wisconsin and currently works as a systems network administrator in Daly City.

Scott is one of an increasing number of war veterans who are participating in America’s growing Occupy movement. Said Keith Shannon, who deployed with Scott to Iraq, “Scott was marching with the 99% because he felt corporations and banks had too much control over our government, and that they weren’t being held accountable for their role in the economic downturn, which caused so many people to lose their jobs and their homes.” People across the country reacted with outrage yesterday to the police brutality unleashed against peaceful people engaged in protest in Oakland — and particularly to the injury of Scott Olsen. Occupy Oakland has been a public forum, set up on public land, concerned with critical public issues about the nation’s financial crisis, consolidation of wealth and power, and the ability of citizens to meaningfully participate in the democratic process. The brutality they were met with sends a chilling message to those who want to serve their country by working for social change.

Scott is currently sedated and in critical condition at a local hospital.

Occupy Cal Poly Teach-in

Cal Poly's first teach-in about the 99% is a hit

A panel discussion regarding the Occupy Wall Street movement entitled, "Occupy What?: A Forum on the Occupy Wall Street Movement" was held earlier today on the Cal Poly Campus in affiliation with Occupy Cal Poly. Sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts, the panel discussion gained a large amount of progressive momentum and was positively received on all fronts. Originally set for location in Phillips Hall, the discussion was moved to the Chumash Auditorium due to a need to accommodate the substantially larger turn-out than originally expected. The panel of esteemed professors seemed to be on board with the high level messages being conveyed. Professors of Communications Studies, Economics, Religious Studies, Political Science and Philosophy were present. The representatives of each discipline expressed perspectives about the Occupy movement seemingly influenced by their field of expertise. It became obvious that the Occupy effort holds great importance to students and professors. Tables, with the purpose of education and positive discourse, will be facilitated by Occupy Cal Poly and located on campus at Dexter lawn tomorrow, Wednesday, October 26th.

Visit http://www.facebook.com/occupycalpoly for more information on the upcoming events, meetings and discussions organized by the Occupy Cal Poly efforts.
